A former Fayetteville City Council and Planning Commission member has died, according to Mayor Molly Rawn, prompting an outpouring of condolences and tributes across the community he once served. Sloan Scroggin, who was 41 years old, is being remembered as a dedicated public servant, educator, and professional whose work left a lasting impact on Fayetteville, Arkansas.

In a statement released late Wednesday on the city’s official Facebook page, Mayor Rawn expressed deep sorrow over his passing. “I am saddened to learn of the passing of former Council Member Sloan Scroggin,” she said. “Sloan cared deeply about Fayetteville and dedicated years of service to our community through the Planning Commission, City Council, and his work helping people build homes and lives here in our City.” Her words reflect the respect and appreciation many in the city held for Scroggin’s commitment to public service and community development.

Scroggin was elected to the Fayetteville City Council in 2019, where he represented Ward 3, Position 1. During his time in office, he was known for his involvement in discussions surrounding city growth, planning, and housing development. Although he was defeated in the 2022 election by current council member Scott Berna, his contributions during his tenure continued to be recognized by colleagues and residents alike.

Beyond his role in local government, Scroggin built a multifaceted professional career. He worked as a mathematics instructor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he helped students navigate complex academic challenges and develop critical thinking skills. In addition to his work in education, he was also active in real estate as a licensed Realtor and contributed to housing development through home remodeling projects, further connecting his professional expertise to the growth of the local community.

Scroggin’s academic background reflected his strong foundation in economics and finance. He earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His education and professional experience combined to shape his perspective on housing, urban planning, and community development—areas in which he was deeply engaged throughout his career.

Friends, colleagues, and community members remember Scroggin as thoughtful, intelligent, and passionate about Fayetteville’s future. His work on the Planning Commission and City Council demonstrated his dedication to balancing growth with community needs, and his contributions helped shape conversations about the city’s development during a period of change.

As news of his passing continues to spread, many are reflecting on the impact he made both in public service and in the lives of those who knew him personally. While his time was cut short, Sloan Scroggin’s legacy remains tied to his commitment to education, civic engagement, and the Fayetteville community he cared deeply about.

He will be remembered, mourned, and honored by those whose lives he touched throughout his years of service and beyond.
