Adam Smith, affectionately known around the Volusia County baseball community as “Stump,” has died following a tragic car accident in Port Orange, Florida, on Sunday, May 10. He was just 26 years old. His passing has left an immense void in the hearts of players, fellow coaches, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him through the game he loved so deeply.

Coach Smith was a well-known and respected presence in local baseball circles, having built a reputation not only for his deep understanding of the game but also for his energy, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to his players. A proud local athlete, he played high school baseball at New Smyrna Beach, where his passion for the sport first began to stand out. Even then, teammates and coaches recognized his natural leadership and competitive spirit.

After his playing days, Adam transitioned seamlessly into coaching, dedicating his life to developing young athletes both on and off the field. Over the years, he coached at New Smyrna Beach High School and DeLand High School, steadily building a name for himself as a driven and knowledgeable instructor who could connect with players on a personal level. For the past three seasons, he served as a baseball coach at Spruce Creek High School, where he became a cornerstone of the program.

At Spruce Creek, Coach Smith’s impact went far beyond wins and losses. He was known for his ability to teach fundamentals with patience, his attention to detail, and his belief in every player who stepped onto the field. Players often described him as someone who pushed them to be better while also genuinely caring about their growth as young men. His nickname, “Stump,” became a familiar and endearing part of the team culture, reflecting both his personality and the strong bonds he formed.

Colleagues throughout Volusia County remember him as a rising coaching talent with a bright future ahead. Many believed he was destined for even greater opportunities in the sport he devoted his life to. His sudden passing has therefore been especially devastating, cutting short a journey that was still in its early but promising stages.

Beyond baseball, Adam Smith is being remembered for his loyalty, his humor, and the way he made people feel valued. Tributes from former players and fellow coaches have highlighted not just what he taught on the field, but how he influenced lives off it.

He leaves behind a legacy rooted in passion, mentorship, and love for the game—a legacy that will continue to live on in every player he coached and every life he touched.
