John Humphries, a respected broadcasting executive and former general manager of WYFF News 4, has passed away. Humphries, who retired in December 2024 after a distinguished career in television broadcasting, died Monday, leaving behind a grieving family, colleagues, and countless friends throughout the media industry and the communities he served.
Humphries devoted decades of his life to broadcasting, earning widespread admiration for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. He spent 18 years with Hearst Television, where he became known not only as a skilled executive but also as a mentor and trusted friend to many within the organization.
In 2016, Humphries returned to WYFF News 4 as president and general manager, a role that marked a meaningful homecoming after previously serving six years at the station as general sales manager. During his leadership, the station continued to thrive, earning respect for its strong journalism, community involvement, and dedication to viewers across the Upstate region.
Before his return to Greenville, Humphries served as president and general manager of WGAL-TV, Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate serving the Lancaster-Harrisburg-Lebanon-York market in Pennsylvania. His leadership there further solidified his reputation as one of the industry’s most respected station executives.
Prior to joining Hearst Television in 2006, Humphries built a successful career in North Carolina and South Carolina television markets. He served as director of sales for WBTV and also held leadership positions at WSPA-TV and WASV-TV. His broadcasting journey began at WSOC-TV, where he initially worked as a production specialist before transitioning into sports reporting, anchoring, and eventually sales leadership.
A graduate of Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in Speech, Humphries remained deeply connected to his alma mater, serving on its Alumni Council. He also completed the Hearst Management Institute executive development program, further reflecting his dedication to professional growth and leadership.
Beyond broadcasting, Humphries was heavily involved in civic and charitable organizations. He served as past president of the board of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association and the SCBA Educational Foundation. He also contributed his time and leadership to organizations including United Way of Greenville County, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, the South Carolina Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Urban League of the Upstate. His commitment to diversity and community leadership earned him recognition as a Riley Institute Diversity Fellow through Furman University.
Most recently, Humphries was inducted into the South Carolina Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a career defined by integrity, mentorship, and impact.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and granddaughter, all of whom were the center of his life beyond his professional accomplishments.
In a heartfelt statement, current WYFF News 4 General Manager Blake Bridges remembered Humphries as far more than a leader. “He was our friend, our cheerleader, our biggest fan,” Bridges said, reflecting the deep admiration and affection felt throughout the station and industry.
